Anniversary of Jerry McCabe killing today

Today is the anniversary of the killing of Detective Jerry McCabe who was shot multiple times in an IRA post office raid back 1996.

Detective McCabe and his colleague Garda Ben O Sullivan were escorting a postal van on a round of deliveries throughout Co. Limerick on June 7 of that year. At 6.50am the convoy pulled up outside a small post office in Adare.

It was at this point that a Pajero jeep rammed the Garda car from behind. Two men emerged with balaclavas and Kalashnikovs and began firing shots into the Garda car killing Mr McCabe instantly and wounding Ben O Sullivan.

A special memorial service is being held in Limerick to mark the anniversary. Some of Mr McCabe’s former colleagues will attend.

The Limerick Blogger has uploaded a documentary shown last night on RTE One about the killing.

Speaking today about that programme, Senator John Minihan said “I have always argued that the killing of Jerry McCabe was intentional, calculated and cold-blooded.“Last night’s programme re-enforced my belief.”

Going on to say, “If Mr Adams believes the killing was wrong he has an obligation to name that ’authorised officer".
