Limericks Lesbian wedding celebration

An article on the front of this weeks Post newspaper tells us how Limerick will be the host this summer to Irelands first openly gay marriage celebration..

A lesbian couple aged in their 30's and 40's, with one of the women originally from the Northside of Limerick, will hold their wedding reception in a city centre hotel.

A spokesperson for The Gay and Lesbian Equality Network told the paper,

“As it is at present, gay couples in the Republic have to travel to Belfast or other areas of the North of Ireland to secure a Civil Partnership licence in a registry office. This is not recognized in the Republic, but there are lots of gay couples going north for these marriages”
The couple decided to go public with the celebration in the hope it would offer encouragement to other gay couples to pressure the Government into moving forward with the legalisation of Gay marriage in the Republic.
