TB screening at Limerick school

Screening for tuberculosis has taken place in Presentation Secondary School in Limerick following the diagnosis of the disease. One case has already been confirmed at the school in the last week.Screening has commenced for classmates of the pupil and others who have had contact with the girl.

The HSE says there are 30 to 40 new cases discovered in Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary every year.

Tuberculosis is a disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs. But, TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal
