Two held after Gardai seize loaded pistol

Two men have been arrested following the discovery of a loaded gun in a stolen car Saturday night.

Gardai spotted the car which was reported stolen and stopped it on the Athlunkard Road in Corbally close to 2am.

After a search of the vehicle, Gardai, assisted by the Emergency Response Unit, recovered a loaded Glock pistol.

The two occupants of the car were arrested and are being held under section 30 of the offences against the state act.

The arrested are believed to be aged 20 and 23.

"One of the men, who is a high-ranking member of the Keane criminal gang, was released from prison recently. He is believed to be the prime suspect in a drive-by shooting in the city last month, when an opposing McCarthy-Dundon gang member was shot twice near his home. He has more than 50 criminal convictions.Both individuals are from the St Mary's Park area of the city and are regarded as dangerous criminals by gardai."
