Residents evacuated after apartment block fire

Panicked residents of a city apartment block were evacuated last night after smoke filled the building from a fire in the basement.

Emergency services responded to reports of a fire at the Parkview House apartments adjacent to the Peoples Park on Edward Street around 12.15am last night where they discovered a car on fire in the parking basement of the apartment block. Residents were evacuated as smoke filled the building.

Ambulances were called to the scene although it’s believed no one was injured and the blaze was brought quickly under control by the fire service.
