Major city centre refurbishment proposed

A very interesting story on the front of the Limerick Post this evening in which a proposal for a major refurbishment of a drab area of the city centre is unveiled.

Michael Tiernan, a developer has been talking to the paper in which he outlines his vision for the regeneration of an area of eight acres in the city centre.

His vision involves the demolition of Roches Stores, Penneys and Burger King, the demolition of Arthur’s Quay Shopping Centre, an unoccupied premise on Liddy Street and Dunnes Stores on Sarsfield Street. Even the tourist office isn’t safe.

His plans also involve the acquisition of the park at Arthur’s Quay. Roches Stores, Penneys, Dunnes, Tesco and Burger King have all given there full support to the project which would see the development of an underground road from Lower Henry Street to Rutland Street to facilitate the pedestrianisation of Upper Patrick Street and Lower O’Connell Street, would include a major civic square as well as a number of civic spaces, a quayside boardwalk, new theatre/concert hall and the relocation of the city library from the Granary.

Speaking to the Limerick Post, Developer Mr. Tiernan said,

"It would be hoped that our development would be the catalyst for an imaginative regeneration of Nicholas Street and present a historically unique opportunity to transform the centre of Limerick city and will enable it to become once again the civic and retail heartland of the entire region, particularly given the enthusiasm of the stakeholders”.

He went on to say,

"This is a one in a 200-year opportunity to completely transform, enhance and extend the city centre for the people of Limerick and the challenge is to empower the vision we have to make this possible. Our aim is to focus on what the people want and our ambition is to go to planning next year and with a phased development process, achieve completion by 2010.”

However Cllr Michael Hourigan has raised concerns that there may be problems with the rezoning of Arthur’s Quay Park.

A very interesting proposal in the whole and well worth a read.

Limerick County Council was not pressing to jail her today, he was not going to put her in jail.

Ms Kaiser claims she is in this position because of the council's decision to take away the spring water source, which comes from Bleach Lough, from the people of her community.

Ms Kaiser was unable to attend the hearing last week due to one of her children being sick.

On June 7th two men approached a man on Cruises street asking him did he want to buy a laptop. He was brought into a car where he was driven to Arthur’s Quay. When he exited the car and the scum drove off, he was shocked to find when he opened the case, that it contained two Argos catalogues.

Last Monday the duo struck again. The two men managed to convince a man to hand over €550 and his mobile phone in exchange for this “new laptop”. Unfortunately when the scumbags had fled the man opened his laptop case to also find two Argos catalogues. This incident happened on William Street.

River Deel protesters due before high court

“Deelgate” will reach a new stage today when five of the protesters will appear before the High court after they breached an order handed down to them to cease their protest at the white line in Palaskenry.

The five are to explain why they breached a previous court order and prevented work from proceeding on the water scheme. If they don’t give an undertaking to end their protest then could be locked up.

The project which has been stopped several times before and is designed to re-source the town’s water supply which is currently coming from the local bleach lough.

The council wants the towns supply coming from the river Deel. The residents of Palaskenry are having none of it. They insist the river Deel is one of the most polluted rivers in Ireland. However the County Council say that the treatment of the water supply from the River Deel is "on a par" with any other supply in the country.

Protesters stopped workers from continuing with the project again last Wednesday and the County Council responded with Summonses which were served last Friday evening on the five people.

River Deel project on hold again

Deel or No Deel

Contractors involved in the re-sourcing of the water supply to Palaskenry have been forced to down tools yet again today after protesters defied a court order to cease their protest at the so-called white line.

The Limerick County Council had only recently been granted a High court injunction against seven specific Palaskenry protestors and anyone else who interferers with the process. But that didn’t stop them massing at the work site once again today.

As the workmen once again tried to continue with the digging , protestors shouted “ No Deel water, No Deel water” at the workers.

One resident confronted the contractors and asked them to leave saying,

Gather up your machines and go back to Cork because as far as were concerned, your coming down here, you see those women and children. If we all end up in jail, you’ll be part to blame for this.

An official form the council then arrived at the scene to read the high court injunction against the protesters but they didn’t listen and shouted him down.

Yesterday one of the Rossport five, Michael O’ Shine who spent 94 days in jail for blocking the construction of a gas pipeline in Mayo said he supported the Palaskenry residents saying that all they want is to retain their water supply from bleach lough.

He claimed that it was totally wrong that the Limerick County Council would use the entire weight of the court system against the protestors. So once again the work has stopped and the protestors say they will stay day and night. The next move is now up to the county council.

Workers previously had to stop work in May due to the protests.

Coincidently this picture appeared on the front of the Limerick Independent today. Three lads having a swim in the Bleach Lough during the blistering weather.

Anniversary of Jerry McCabe killing today

Today is the anniversary of the killing of Detective Jerry McCabe who was shot multiple times in an IRA post office raid back 1996.

Detective McCabe and his colleague Garda Ben O Sullivan were escorting a postal van on a round of deliveries throughout Co. Limerick on June 7 of that year. At 6.50am the convoy pulled up outside a small post office in Adare.

It was at this point that a Pajero jeep rammed the Garda car from behind. Two men emerged with balaclavas and Kalashnikovs and began firing shots into the Garda car killing Mr McCabe instantly and wounding Ben O Sullivan.

A special memorial service is being held in Limerick to mark the anniversary. Some of Mr McCabe’s former colleagues will attend.

The Limerick Blogger has uploaded a documentary shown last night on RTE One about the killing.

Speaking today about that programme, Senator John Minihan said “I have always argued that the killing of Jerry McCabe was intentional, calculated and cold-blooded.“Last night’s programme re-enforced my belief.”

Going on to say, “If Mr Adams believes the killing was wrong he has an obligation to name that ’authorised officer".

Limerick jail sells cigarettes to 16-year-old

Limerick Prison has admitted today that cigarettes were sold to a 16 year old while he was being detained in the jail.

The prison has also confirmed that a “major investigation” is now underway to determine just how a person under 18 was able to buy cigs from the jail shop.

Prison officials said that they have a very strict policy of not selling cigarettes to people under the legal age. So how did it happen...

Well,It is believed that prison officials were given the wrong date of birth and believed he was over the legal age to be remanded in jail.

John Devane, solicitor for the minor (who else) said he is now threatening legal action against minister for Justice Michael McDowell and Limerick prison. He says he has asked the prison for an apology together with an undertaking that the prison will not sell tobacco to any person under the legal age.

He also said that his client was a minor and was detained in the prison"for a number of days in an adult prisoner environment and this is also against the law"

In a letter written to the Justice Minister Devane said, “It is an appalling thing to see that every shopkeeper, pub owner and hotelier in this country have to apply with the laws of the state but yet the State totally disregard them.

This isn’t the first time that John Devane has had issues with McDowell.
Last month Devane said he was bringing a case against the Dept of Justice after a client of his died in Limerick jail.
